Medical Exemption

Massachusetts requires annual safety inspections that test window tint. Fail the inspection, and your registration cannot be renewed. Under MGL c.90 §9D(b), only a physician-certified exemption allows darker tint on your vehicle. Our MA-licensed physicians review your existing documentation entirely online.

Massachusetts Annual Inspection: Tint is Measured Every Year

Massachusetts is one of only a handful of states that tests window tint during the annual safety inspection. RMV-licensed inspection stations use tint meters to verify your VLT meets the 35% threshold. If your tint fails, your vehicle cannot pass inspection \u2014 and without a valid inspection sticker, you cannot renew your registration.

This creates a dual enforcement system: tint violations are caught at both traffic stops ($250 fine) and annual inspections (registration consequence). A medical exemption under §9D(b) resolves both permanently.

Why Massachusetts Drivers Need Medical Tint Exemptions

Annual inspections with tint testing, one of the highest base fines in New England, dense MSP enforcement on I-93 and the Mass Pike, and the nation's premier medical institutions treating photosensitive conditions make Massachusetts a critical state for medical tint exemptions.

Annual Test

RMV Inspection Consequence

Massachusetts tests tint at every annual safety inspection. Fail = no inspection sticker = cannot renew registration. Unlike most New England states, MA enforcement extends beyond traffic stops to an annual checkpoint every driver must pass.

$250 Fine

High Base Penalty

Massachusetts charges $250 per tint violation — nearly triple Connecticut’s $92. Repeat violations can trigger mandatory tint removal and RMV hearings. The one-time $225 exemption fee is less than a single ticket.

World-Class

Boston Medical Hub

Boston has the highest per-capita physician ratio in the US. Mass General, Brigham & Women’s, Dana-Farber, and Beth Israel treat some of the largest photosensitive patient populations in the country.

Sedan vs SUV

Vehicle-Type Split

Sedans face 35% VLT on all windows. SUVs and vans allow any darkness on rear windows but still require 35% on front. Many sedan drivers don’t realize their back windows are more restricted than SUVs.

Massachusetts Window Tint Law Limits

Under MGL c.90 §9D, Massachusetts requires 35% VLT on front side windows for all vehicles. Sedans must also maintain 35% on back side and rear windows. SUVs and vans can have any darkness on rear windows. No metallic or mirrored tint is allowed. Red, amber, and yellow tint colors are prohibited.

Compare Massachusetts to neighbors: Connecticut allows 35%/35%, Rhode Island requires 70% on front, New Hampshire requires 70% on front, and Vermont requires no tint on front. Massachusetts sits in the middle of New England but uniquely enforces through annual inspection.

Medical Conditions That Likely Qualify in Massachusetts

Boston's Caribbean community has elevated lupus prevalence, treated at the nationally recognized Brigham & Women's Lupus Center. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute serves melanoma patients statewide. Massachusetts' northern latitude contributes to high MS prevalence. These conditions are commonly associated with §9D(b) exemption approvals.
