Massachusetts Window Tint
Massachusetts requires annual safety inspections that test window tint. Fail the inspection, and your registration cannot be renewed. Under MGL c.90 §9D(b), only a physician-certified exemption allows darker tint on your vehicle. Our MA-licensed physicians review your existing documentation entirely online.

Why Massachusetts Drivers Need Medical Tint Exemptions
Annual inspections with tint testing, one of the highest base fines in New England, dense MSP enforcement on I-93 and the Mass Pike, and the nation's premier medical institutions treating photosensitive conditions make Massachusetts a critical state for medical tint exemptions.
Massachusetts Window Tint Law Limits
Under MGL c.90 §9D, Massachusetts requires 35% VLT on front side windows for all vehicles. Sedans must also maintain 35% on back side and rear windows. SUVs and vans can have any darkness on rear windows. No metallic or mirrored tint is allowed. Red, amber, and yellow tint colors are prohibited.
Compare Massachusetts to neighbors: Connecticut allows 35%/35%, Rhode Island requires 70% on front, New Hampshire requires 70% on front, and Vermont requires no tint on front. Massachusetts sits in the middle of New England but uniquely enforces through annual inspection.

Medical Conditions That Likely Qualify in Massachusetts
Boston's Caribbean community has elevated lupus prevalence, treated at the nationally recognized Brigham & Women's Lupus Center. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute serves melanoma patients statewide. Massachusetts' northern latitude contributes to high MS prevalence. These conditions are commonly associated with §9D(b) exemption approvals.
