Massachusetts Tint Exemption Form — Download & Instructions

Learn how to obtain, fill out, and submit the Massachusetts window tint medical exemption form — or skip the paperwork entirely with our online process.

Skip the Paperwork — Apply Online Instead

Instead of dealing with paper forms, in-person doctor visits, and RMV processing, you can complete the entire process online in about 5 minutes. A licensed Massachusetts physician reviews your existing medical records against MGL c.90 §9D requirements and issues your exemption digitally. No RMV visit required.

Why You Need This Before Your Next Inspection

Massachusetts requires an annual vehicle safety inspection that includes tint testing. If your tint exceeds 35% VLT and you don't have an exemption form on file, your vehicle fails inspection and you cannot renew your registration. Getting your exemption before your next inspection date avoids this cycle entirely.

The Traditional Massachusetts Tint Exemption Process

Under MGL c.90 §9D(b), a licensed Massachusetts physician can authorize a tint exemption. If you prefer the traditional route, here's how it works:

1

Get a Physician Appointment

Schedule an appointment with a licensed Massachusetts physician who is willing to evaluate your need for a tint exemption. This can be your PCP at Mass General, Brigham & Women’s, Beth Israel, or any licensed provider. Note: most PCPs are unfamiliar with the tint exemption process and may decline to sign the paperwork.

2

Physician Evaluation

The doctor must examine you and determine that your medical condition requires darker window tint for UV or light protection. They need to document the specific condition, medical necessity, and sign the exemption authorization.

3

Complete Your Information

Provide your personal details, driver’s license number, vehicle information (VIN, make, model, year), and the specific windows you need exempted. Ensure all information matches your Massachusetts registration.

4

Keep Documentation in Vehicle

Massachusetts does not require filing with the RMV. Keep the physician-signed exemption documentation in your vehicle at all times. Present it to law enforcement during traffic stops and to the inspector at your annual safety inspection.

Why Most Massachusetts PCPs Won't Sign Tint Exemption Paperwork

Most primary care physicians and specialists — even at major centers like Mass General, Brigham & Women's, and Beth Israel — are unfamiliar with the MGL c.90 §9D exemption process and decline to sign tint-specific paperwork. Our service bridges this gap: you provide your existing medical records, and our licensed Massachusetts physician reviews them against state requirements.
