Massachusetts Tint Law in Boston

Massachusetts General Laws c.90 §9D establishes statewide window tint requirements that apply uniformly in Boston, Cambridge, Quincy, and throughout Suffolk, Middlesex, and Norfolk counties. Massachusetts has some of the strictest tint standards in the Northeast:

  • Windshield: Non-reflective tint only above the AS-1 line
  • Front side windows: Must allow at least 35% VLT
  • Back side windows (sedans): Must allow at least 35% VLT
  • Rear window: Must allow at least 35% VLT for sedans; any darkness for SUVs/vans
  • Reflectivity: Tint must not be more reflective than standard factory glass

The 35% VLT requirement means moderate tinting is technically illegal without a medical exemption — and darker tints commonly applied for privacy (20%, 15%, or 5%) are clearly non-compliant.

MSP and BPD Enforcement in Greater Boston

The Massachusetts State Police (Troop H covers the Massachusetts Turnpike; Troop A covers Boston metro) and Boston PD enforce tint violations throughout the area. Active enforcement corridors include:

  • I-93 (Central Artery) through downtown Boston
  • I-90 (Massachusetts Turnpike) from Logan Airport to Route 128
  • Route 128/I-95 — the outer beltway corridor
  • Storrow Drive and Memorial Drive along the Charles River
  • Surface streets in South Boston, Dorchester, and Roxbury

Massachusetts tint violations are civil motor vehicle infraction citations. Base fines are typically $35–$100, but they require a Registry hearing for formal resolution and can appear on your driving record. Boston's Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) also includes tint in annual inspection checks.

Medical Tint Exemptions for Boston-Area Residents

MGL c.90 §9D(b) allows licensed Massachusetts physicians to authorize darker tint for medical necessity. Boston's world-class medical infrastructure — Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's, Dana-Farber, and Beth Israel Deaconess — treats significant populations with photosensitive conditions.

Common Boston-Area Qualifying Conditions

  • Photophobia — glare from Boston Harbor, the Charles River, and I-93 is intense
  • Lupus — Brigham and Women's Lupus Center serves one of the largest lupus populations in New England
  • Multiple Sclerosis — Partners Healthcare and Brigham treat a major MS population
  • Migraines — high prevalence among Boston's professional and academic workforce
  • Post-LASIK sensitivity — Boston Eye Group and NEEC are among New England's largest vision centers
  • Melanoma history — Dana-Farber treats significant melanoma populations
