Massachusetts Tint Exemption

Massachusetts RMV Medical Tint Exemption Process

Massachusetts medical tint exemptions are physician-issued and do not require a Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) filing. But they must meet specific requirements to be valid at RMV inspections and MSP stops.

Does the Massachusetts RMV Require a Filing for Tint Exemptions?

No. The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles does not process or register medical tint exemptions. Under MGL c.90 §9D(b), the exemption is entirely physician-issued. A licensed Massachusetts physician provides written certification, which you carry in your vehicle. No RMV form, no vehicle registration notation, no special permit from the state.

The MA Annual Inspection and Medical Tint

Massachusetts requires annual vehicle safety inspections. The inspection includes a window tint test — inspectors use calibrated VLT meters to check front side window transparency. Without a medical exemption, tint below 35% VLT on any window (except rear of SUVs/vans) results in an inspection failure.

With a valid Massachusetts medical tint exemption presented to the inspection station, the inspector notes the authorization and issues a passing sticker — even if your tint is darker than the 35% standard. This is critical for annual registration renewal.

What the Massachusetts Exemption Requires

  • Written certification from a licensed Massachusetts physician
  • Patient full name matching MA driver's license
  • Physician's Massachusetts medical license number
  • Statement of medical necessity for reduced light transmission
  • Physician signature and date
  • Must be in the vehicle at all times — presented to MSP, BPD, or any officer on demand
  • Must also be presented to inspection stations before the tint test
